As usual I use box or sphere to slowly bump the parts out from it.
About texture you can try the Unwrap UVW on modifier list (For 3Ds MAX), and then just paint the texture or apply some texture you wants to use on it. Render in low quality to see the result.
For me, I won't even care some tiny little mistake or texture clipping, I use Photoshop to edit them after I finish the Render
